LA PLATA, Md.La Plata High School junior Trevor Thompson finished second at the MPSSAA Class 2A state cross country championships on Saturday, Nov. 8, 2025, clocking a time of 16:46.45. The performance followed his win at the SMAC meet, where he became La Plata’s first boys’ cross country champion since 2004.

Thompson finished behind race winner Trevor Miyagishima of Hammond High School in Howard County, who took first in 16:37.52.

Thompson’s rise has been steadily building throughout the fall. One of his biggest breakthroughs came earlier in October at the 51st Paul Short Run hosted by Lehigh University on Thursday, Oct. 2. Racing against more than 350 athletes from 41 schools, he ran a personal-best 16:30.1 and placed 22nd overall.

That momentum carried directly into the SMAC cross country championships on Wednesday, Oct. 22, 2025, where Thompson won the conference title in 16:39 — a major moment for the program and a source of pride throughout the La Plata community.

At the state championships, Thompson’s runner-up finish capped a strong season and stood out as a significant achievement for La Plata’s cross country program.

La Plata junior Lucas Alarie also closed out the year with a top-five finish at the state meet, placing fifth in 17:07.1, after winning the MPSSAA 2A South Region Championships on Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2025, in 16:54.4. His performances contributed to a successful postseason for the Warriors.

La Plata High School recognized Thompson and the entire boys team for their accomplishments this season, which marked a milestone for the program and showcased two of Southern Maryland’s rising distance talents. The community is looking forward to seeing what Thompson and Alarie will accomplish in their senior year.
