LA PLATA, Md. — The countdown is on for crab lovers across Southern Maryland. With the chill of fall settling over the Potomac, two of the region’s favorite seafood spots — Captain Billy’s Crab House in Newburg and Grinders Seafood in Indian Head — are getting ready to hang up their “Gone Crabbing” signs for the winter.

Captain Billy’s Crab House, located at 11495 Popes Creek Road in Newburg, will begin its seasonal closure on Saturday, Nov. 1, 2025. The restaurant has not yet announced its spring reopening date. Known for its outdoor seating, waterfront views, and classic Maryland blue crabs, Captain Billy’s reopened for the 2025 season on Friday, April 11.

Meanwhile, Grinders Seafood, at 4665 Indian Head Highway in Indian Head, will close for the season on Sunday, Nov. 2, 2025, with plans to reopen on April 23, 2026. The family-owned restaurant is known for its friendly service, generous seafood platters, and loyal following — many of whom mark their calendars each spring for its grand return.

Crab season in Maryland typically runs from April through November, depending on water temperatures and harvesting conditions. While these restaurant closures don’t mark the official end of the season, they do signal the final weeks for enjoying local crabs at waterfront staples.

Their closure announcements serve as a reminder that there’s still time to squeeze in one more basket of Old Bay–dusted crabs before the docks go quiet for winter. Be sure to call your favorite local seafood spot to confirm their hours, as other seasonal closures may vary across the region.

Both Captain Billy’s and Grinders Seafood are featured stops on the Maryland Crab & Oyster Trail, a statewide guide highlighting the best places to experience authentic Chesapeake Bay seafood. Their seasonal menus, riverside locations, and loyal followings make them standout destinations for locals and visitors craving Maryland’s iconic flavors.

These seasonal closure announcements were shared during the Charles County Board of License Commissioners meeting held Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025.
