LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The St. Mary’s County Commissioners honored the Leonardtown High School Boys Varsity Soccer team Tuesday after the Raiders secured the 2025 Maryland Class 4A state championship. The recognition marked the second state title for the program in three years.

St. Mary’s County Commissioner Mike Hewitt praised the team while highlighting the countywide investment for new turf fields that helped elevate local athletics.

“You make us all proud,” Hewitt said. “God bless you. You have made the investment worth it. You have state championships for us to look to, and we are proud of you.”

The official proclamation celebrated head coach Luke Kokolios, his staff and all of the athletes for their competitive season and dedication to their school and community.

Kokolios told commissioners the title was the product of long-term community development.

“To be able to do two state championships in three years is special, and there is a lot of work that goes on with that,” Kokolios said. “Not only just within our own team, but within the community, [and] things like providing a turf facility for us to train on is huge.”

Kokolios said the program’s success reflects more than talent.

“What makes this group unique is the standard that these guys set every day, their discipline, their intentional effort and their commitment to each other,” Kokolios said. “This championship reflects not just talent but the culture these players and coaches have put together. We’re proud to represent our school and this county, and we’re grateful for the support that makes moments like this possible. Thank you and go Raiders.”

Players introduced themselves for the proclamation, the commissioners and the families attending the St. Mary’s County Commissioners meeting.
