LEONARDTOWN, Md. — The Town of Leonardtown was abuzz with holiday cheer on Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, as residents and visitors gathered to celebrate the annual Christmas on the Square and Tree Lighting Ceremony. This beloved tradition marked the start of the festive season with an evening packed with joy, community spirit, and dazzling lights.
The event kicked off at 4:30 p.m. with a host of activities for all ages. Attendees enjoyed live entertainment that filled the square with festive melodies and captivating performances. Families delighted in sleigh and fire truck rides, balloon art, and a living nativity that brought the Christmas story to life. Meanwhile, the holiday market bustled with shoppers looking for unique gifts and treats, and food vendors served up seasonal favorites.

One of the evening’s highlights was, of course, Santa’s grand arrival, followed by the lighting of the town’s magnificent Christmas tree at 7:00 p.m. The Leonardtown Volunteer Fire Department played a key role in this magical moment, drawing gasps and applause as the tree illuminated the square, spreading holiday warmth to all.

This year’s event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of numerous local organizations. Thanks to the meticulous planning of Town officials, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, the St. Mary’s County Emergency Management Division, Maryland State Police, Maryland State Highway, St. Mary’s County Public Works, and local volunteer fire and rescue departments, the event was both secure and smoothly executed.
