LEONARDTOWN, Md. — Leonardtown officials received an update on a draft Public Art Master Plan during the Town of Leonardtown Council meeting on Jan. 12, outlining a long-term vision to integrate public art into town projects, public spaces and daily life.

Assistant Town Administrator Jeanine Harrington said, in the Public Art Master Plan memo, that this draft is “intended to guide how public art is planned, funded, managed and incorporated into infrastructure and future development across Leonardtown,” and also “to summarize key themes, opportunities, and next steps as the plan moves toward refinement and adoption.” The draft plan was assisted by public art consultants Todd Bressi and Jo Davis.

The plan positions public art as a core component of Leonardtown’s identity and economic development strategy, supporting the town’s role as a regional destination for arts, dining, recreation and waterfront experiences.

Community input gathered through surveys, interviews and public events emphasized expanding public art beyond downtown to areas such as the wharf, Breton Bay Greenway and Route 5 corridor. Residents expressed interest in landmark artworks, playful and family-friendly installations, and storytelling that reflects Leonardtown’s environmental setting and diverse history.

The draft identifies opportunities for public art at the waterfront, greenways, Tudor Hall and Fenwick Street areas, as well as murals and smaller placemaking projects. It also recommends creating a Public Art Committee, diversifying funding sources and establishing a clear process for community proposals.
