Marquis Deangelo Barnes

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — On Oct. 8, 2025, Marquis Deangelo Barnes, 37, of Lexington Park, was arrested and charged with possession of a handgun in a vehicle, possession of a loaded handgun in a vehicle, violation of a protective order, illegal possession of a regulated firearm, and illegal possession of ammunition, according to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO).

Deputies initiated a traffic stop on Great Mills Road near Pacific Drive after observing a blue Nissan Rogue with a headlight out. Police reports state the vehicle failed to stop immediately and continued onto Liberty Street before pulling into a parking lot near an apartment complex. Deputies allegedly observed the driver reaching toward the passenger side before coming to a full stop. The driver was identified as Barnes, whose license was found to be suspended.

According to police documentation, deputies allegedly detected a strong odor of alcohol on Barnes’ breath, noting he allegedly also had slurred speech and unsteady behavior. Barnes refused to perform standardized field sobriety tests (SFST) and declined an Intoximeter test, police said. Deputies placed Barnes under arrest. A subsequent search of the vehicle reportedly revealed multiple liquor bottles and a loaded .40-caliber Taurus handgun under the passenger seat with a round in the chamber.

Court records indicate Barnes was subject to a protective order issued on May 5, 2025, requiring him to surrender all firearms following a prior domestic incident on April 25, 2025. During that earlier case, deputies responded to a Lexington Park residence after reports that Barnes had allegedly broken a window. Police observed broken glass consistent with the victim’s account and followed a trail of blood to Barnes’ residence, where he was found with a bleeding laceration on his right arm.

According to law enforcement documentation, Barnes had also been arrested earlier that same day for an alleged assault involving the same victim. In an unrelated custody incident, correctional officers reportedly observed Barnes attempting to dispose of suspected cocaine inside the St. Mary’s County Detention and Rehabilitation Center, which authorities said was captured on facility video surveillance.

Barnes was released pending trial and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 13, 2025. If convicted on all current charges, Barnes faces a maximum potential sentence exceeding 25 years of incarceration.
