LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — A 43-year-old California man with an active arrest warrant was taken into custody on Tuesday, Aug. 5, 2025, after he walked out of a Lexington Park residence directly in front of a deputy who was there for a separate investigation. The warrant arrest subsequently led to a new charge for drug possession.

According to the statement of probable cause, a St. Mary’s County sheriff’s deputy was at a residence on Leesa Court to assist another agency with a criminal investigation. While on scene, the deputy observed Edward R. Curley IV exit the home.

The deputy positively identified Curley and confirmed he had an active arrest warrant. Curley was taken into custody without incident.

A search of Curley’s wallet following the arrest revealed a single buprenorphine sublingual strip, a Schedule III controlled dangerous substance. Curley reportedly stated that the strip was “for emergencies” and admitted that he was unable to produce a prescription for the medication.

Curley was charged with CDS: Possess-Not Cannabis, a misdemeanor that carries a maximum penalty of up to one year in prison and a fine of up to $5,000. He was transported to the St. Mary’s County Detention Center and later released on his own recognizance. A trial for the drug charge is scheduled for Sept. 15, 2025.
