James Lawson Williams

James Lawson Williams, 69, of Waldorf, MD, passed away unexpectedly on February 3, 2022 at UM Capital Region Medical Center with his family by his side. He was born on February 4, 1952 to the late Julia (Elam) Worthy, and James Williams.

He was a proud African American who grew up in Washington DC. James enlisted in the United States Navy after graduating high school. He would spend his career being a jet mechanic and supporting the USN. After 20 years of service, he retired in March, 1994 and became a civilian employee. Throughout James’ career, he was honored with many medals, commendations and awards for his dedication and commitment to protecting our country.

James met the love of his life when he was a young man and knew heโ€™d found his other half. He would marry Cheryl and they spent over 44 years together and their love produced two beautiful daughters, Ashley and Amber whom he adored.

He was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, uncle, brother and son who cherished his family above all else. A man of great faith, James enjoyed his Bible study classes and rejoicing in the Lordโ€™s blessings that surrounded him. When he became a grandfather he was a very proud man and loved the time he spent with his grandson Nolyn.

James enjoyed traveling and vacationing with his family. He shared the joy of adventure and made every new journey eventful. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching and yelling at his favorite teams. Go Skins!!! James never turned down a game of cards, especially Spades. He was a Triominos game genius and would play anytime. He was known to have his music playing in the background throughout his day, regardless of the activity.

A real giant of a man, he made everyone feel welcomed and loved. His loss will be felt by many, but none more than his family. As the days grow longer and spring pushes away the cold and dark, pray for the family that they will also push away the grief and rejoice in the knowledge of a wonderful manโ€™s life and eternity with his Lord and Savior.

James is survived by his wife, Cheryl Williams of Mechanicsville, MD; daughters, Ashley Nicole Fortney (Clayton) of King George, VA and Amber Renee Williams (Leanna) of Mechanicsville, MD; grandson, Nolyn Hudler; siblings, Michael Elam (Coney) of Fort Washington, MD and Mabel Worthy, of Lithonia, GA and many nieces, nephews and extended family members and friends.
