DUNKIRK, Md. — A new 10-hole disc golf course has opened at Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park in Dunkirk, but its creation is more than just a new addition to Calvert County’s recreational offerings—it’s a testament to the dedication and passion of two local residents.
Matt Laur and his son Ryan, members of the Southern Maryland Disc Golf Association, played a pivotal role in bringing the county’s first free public disc golf course to life. The course, which officially opened in September 2024, is not only the first of its kind in Calvert County but also one of the few wooded disc golf courses in the region.
“The disc course became a reality thanks to the hard work and dedication of two citizens: Matt Laur and his son Ryan,” Calvert County Parks and Recreation shared on Facebook. “They spent over 100 hours designing the course layout, assisting with sign designs, selecting tee pads and baskets, answering countless questions from park staff, and promoting the course to fellow enthusiasts. We are deeply grateful for their efforts.”
Their contributions went far beyond the technical aspects of course design. By collaborating closely with the Calvert County Department of Parks & Recreation, Matt and Ryan ensured the course would meet the needs of both seasoned players and newcomers to the sport.
“Thanks to Matt and Ryan’s steadfast diligence, the concept of the Ward Farm Park Disc Golf Course became a reality for all to enjoy,” they added.
Disc golf, played similarly to traditional golf but with flying discs instead of balls and clubs, begins from a tee area and ends at an elevated metal basket. The wooded layout of the Ward Farm course offers a unique challenge and scenic backdrop, making it a standout attraction for both local residents and visiting players.
The course is free to the public, with maps available throughout the park and online at calvertcountymd.gov/WardFarm. Ward Farm Recreation and Nature Park is located at 10455 Ward Road in Dunkirk.

I hate it. I went to the woods for the nature, not the ugly baskets and platforms. I miss being able to go on a relaxing walk through nature without the tension of waiting for a flying disk to beam me in the head. Oh well. The trails at Ward Farm were nice for a couple of years before they ruined it.
I find your comment and lack of character without representation of self a waste of all of our time. What these men have done is awesome and they should receive applause and not a faceless critic such as yourself. Please pull this post as you are ignorant to the wonders of disc golf.
Congrats to you two for giving so many something to do outside. I know my grown kids will appreciate your efforts!!!!! very nice of you!
