CALIFORNIA, Md. — For many caregivers, the act of giving is constant and often invisible. A local Southern Maryland artist is working to change that by creating a space where those who care for others can finally pause, reflect, and be supported themselves.

Yolanda Christensen, founder of Benevolent Art LLC, is hosting a special event, “You Serve Too,” on March 28 at the VFW Post 2632 from 1 to 3 p.m. The initiative is part of her broader mission to uplift caregivers through art, connection, and spiritual encouragement.

A Calling Rooted In Lived Experience

Christensen’s inspiration comes from decades of personal experience.

“What inspired me is my own lived experience,” she said in an interview with The BayNet. “I’ve spent over 40 years serving as a caregiver for my husband, a veteran, family, friends, and loved ones. I understand firsthand how easy it is to pour into others while slowly losing touch with yourself.”

She said caregivers are often expected to remain strong for others, while rarely being given space to rest or restore themselves.

Creating a Haven for Caregivers

“Benevolent Art LLC was created as an offering, a space…a haven where caregivers can embrace stillness, breathe, and reconnect with their own sense of identity, beauty, and worth, what I often refer to as their ‘Bella,’” Christensen said.

Art As A Path To Healing

At the heart of her work is the belief that art can be a powerful tool for healing.

“I believe art is a cradle to hold space…a gentle entry point into healing where it can allow caregivers to express what they may not always have words for,” she said. “There is no pressure, no expectations, only gentle space.”

Through creative expression, Christensen said participants are able to release emotions, gain clarity, and reconnect with themselves. One of the ways Christensen supports healing is through the use of sound activation, incorporating singing bowls designed to promote relaxation and restore balance to the body’s energy centers, often referred to as chakras.

“Art, to me, becomes more than something we create, it becomes something we experience,” she said. “It reminds caregivers they are not just providers of care, but individuals with depth, creativity, and sacred worth.”

Uplifting The “Quiet Foundation”

Christensen emphasized that caregivers are the “quiet foundation” of families and communities, often carrying emotional, physical, and mental responsibilities without recognition.

“We deserve to be uplifted,” she said. “When caregivers are supported, we are better able to continue our roles without losing ourselves in the shuffle. Not just appreciation, it’s a necessary act of care for those who care for others.”

A Space To Pause And Reconnect

The March 28 event is designed to reflect that mission, offering a welcoming and judgment-free environment.

“Attendees can expect a warm, welcoming environment where they can simply come as they are,” Christensen said. “It’s not about artistic skill, it’s about creating space to pause, breathe, and reconnect.”

The gathering will include light art activities, moments of reflection, and opportunities to connect with others who share similar caregiving experiences. While the event will include a focus on supporting caregivers of veterans, it is open to caregivers from all walks of life.

A Message Of Worth And Recognition

Above all, Christensen hopes participants leave with a renewed sense of self-worth.

“I want every caregiver to leave knowing that they matter. They are not invisible. Their care has value,” she said. “You are not just here to serve, you are here to be supported, restored, and seen.”
