
CHARLES COUNTY — Get ready to be inspired! Students from Charles County are showcasing their academic excellence as local high schools compete against schools from other regions on the legendary “It’s Academic” game show, now airing on WETA PBS. As the longest-running high school quiz show in history, “It’s Academic” highlights the intellect and teamwork of young scholars. For more than 60 years, the show has tested students’ knowledge in history, literature, science, math and current events.
Maurice J. McDonough High School Finishes Second
Students from Maurice J. McDonough High School in Pomfret, Maryland, competed against Fauquier High School and McLean High School on “It’s Academic,” which aired on March 21, 2025.
The McDonough team, led by senior captain Julie Perriello, included juniors William Benjamin and Cori Avent. Junior alternate Cynclair Wilson, seniors Joseph-Benjamin Afful and Sarah Clark, and junior Madison Scott also contributed to the team’s success. The team was coached by school librarian Joanna Hobbs and science teacher Mary Dempsey.

La Plata High School Prepares for Upcoming Competition
