Tyriel L. Gantt

Leonardtown, MD — A Lexington Park man has been sentenced to six years in jail after he pled guilty to charges of conspiracy to commit armed robbery and second-degree assault in unrelated incidents. Tyriel Gantt, 20, was sentenced Nov. 8 in St. Maryโ€™s County Circuit Court by Judge Michael Stamm.

Gantt was arrested Dec. 17 of 2014 for an incident in which he and another man demanded at knife point money from a victim. The male victim refused to turn over any money and one of the suspects swung the knife, cutting the victimโ€™s jacket. The victim was able to flee and call 911.

The other incidents for which Gantt was charged occurred two days apart in late May and early June of this year at a residence on Suwanne Place in Lexington Park. In the first incident he allegedly struck the female victim in the face and pushed her to the floor by the neck causing her to hit a bathtub. Two days later police were called to the same location. The same female alleged Gantt had slapped her twice and then went inside the house and broke a window pane in the door with his fist.

The victim in the assault cases was Ganttโ€™s girlfriend. Ganttโ€™s attorney Bruce Johnson Jr. of Bowie said his client took responsibility for his actions in a troubled relationship.

As to the conspiracy to commit robbery charges, the attorney said Gantt admitted his involvement in the incident and made an attempt to cooperate with the state in the case against the co-defendant, Cepeda Hicks. Sentencing is scheduled early next year for Hicks.

Judge Stamm sentenced Gantt to four years for the conspiracy to commit armed robbery and two years for the second-degree assault conviction and made them to run consecutive for a total of six years. The judge gave Gantt credit for the 150 days he was served in jail awaiting sentencing.

The state was represented at the sentencing hearing by Assistant Stateโ€™s Attorney Jaymi Sterling.
