Waldorf, MD— On March 18, Charles County Sheriff’s Officer J. Pogar respondedย to the area of Hanover Court in Waldorf for the report of an assaultย in progress.ย 

Pogar arrived on the scene to search the area for a victim who was wearing a blue New England Patriots sweatshirt. The victim was located, Pogar immediatelyย observed, “the victim’s upper lip was split in the middle from his nose through the bottom of his lip. The victim then stated he had spit several teeth out,” according to charging documents.

The victim stated Steven J. Wright, 33, of Waldorf, “hit him (victim) in the face with a hammer during an argument about smoking in the residence. The victim advised he then remembers running away as Wright was chasing him,” according to charging documents.ย 

When Pogar was speaking with the victim, Offr. Gass of the Charles County Sheriff’s Officeย interviewedย Wright and several other involved parties. Gass interviewedย a neighbor who stated, “she saw Wright hit the victim with an object to the rear of the residence and then begin kicking the victim when he fell onto the ground,” according to charging documents.ย 

At that time, a resident of the house grabbed the hammer under the kitchen sink and handed it to Gass.ย 

The victim was transported to Charles Regional Medical Center with severe injuries. According to charging documents, “the defendant denied ever having an argument with the victim.”ย 

Wright was charged with second-degree assault and first-degree assault. Wright has a scheduled hearing April 15 in District Court. Wright faces a maximum jail sentence of 35 years and/or a maximum fine of $2,500.ย
