MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A 37-year-old Fairfax, Va., man is facing a felony firearm charge and several misdemeanors after deputies said he crashed his vehicle while intoxicated at the Maryland International Raceway, where an off-duty trooper reported finding a loaded handgun in plain view on his floorboard.

The incident occurred on Saturday, Aug. 2, 2025, at about 9:45 p.m. According to the statement of probable cause, an off-duty Maryland state trooper working security at the raceway responded to a collision where a green Chevrolet Suburban had struck a parked, unoccupied RV.

The trooper made contact with the driver, identified as Jamere Andre Alexander, and wrote in charging documents that he detected a strong odor of alcohol. The trooper reported Alexander’s eyes were glassy and bloodshot, and his speech was slurred. While speaking with him, the trooper said he observed a black Springfield handgun lying on the front driver’s side floorboard. The weapon was loaded, with a .45-caliber bullet in the chamber and multiple rounds in the magazine, according to the report.

Alexander was placed under arrest for DUI after deputies said he failed field sobriety tests and later registered a .16 BrAC on an Intoximeter test, twice Maryland’s legal limit. A subsequent records check showed Alexander was prohibited from possessing firearms due to a prior assault conviction from 2011, according to court records.

He has been charged with a felony count of firearm possession with a felony/violent crime conviction, as well as multiple misdemeanors including loaded handgun on person, handgun in vehicle and illegal possession of ammunition. The felony charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of five years in prison without the possibility of parole.

Court records show Alexander was released on a $10,000 unsecured personal bond following a bail review hearing. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Sept. 4, 2025.
