BALTIMORE, Md. — The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA), in partnership with the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC), has announced a new paid internship program to involve college students in the historic reconstruction of the Francis Scott Key Bridge.

The Key Bridge Rebuild Internship Program will offer students from four major Maryland institutions — the University of Maryland, College Park; Morgan State University; University of Maryland, Baltimore County; and Johns Hopkins University — the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in engineering, infrastructure development, environmental science and public-sector communications.

“The goal of the internship program is to strengthen collaboration skills among interns, foster community engagement, and help students build professional networks that will serve them well in their future careers,” said Maryland Transportation Secretary and MDTA Chairman Paul J. Wiedefeld.

The program received more than 80 applications from students majoring in civil and mechanical engineering, environmental science, computer science, information systems, business technology and communications. Ten students have been selected to participate in the inaugural summer session, which will run from early June through late August 2025.

Interns will be hired as temporary state employees and focus on project management. They will also assist with environmental analysis, construction oversight and community outreach activities. MDTA and MHEC plan to continue the internship in future project phases and use participant feedback to refine the program’s structure.

“This unique opportunity allows Maryland’s higher education institutions to join in the historic efforts to rebuild and strengthen the resiliency of the new Key Bridge,” said MHEC Secretary Dr. Sanjay Rai. “By providing real-world experience in their fields of study, we enhance the students’ educational journey, promote innovation, and contribute insights and assistance to the project.”

The internship initiative reflects Maryland’s commitment to workforce development while restoring a critical state infrastructure.
