ANNAPOLIS, Md. – Maryland lawmakers, with the support of Governor Wes Moore, are considering legislation that would give authorities the right to prosecute people who threaten election officials or their family members.

The Protecting Election Officials Act of 2024 would make threatening an election official a misdemeanor. It would be punishable by up to three years in prison or a fine of up to $2,500.

At a bill hearing on Wednesday, Mooreโ€™s chief legislative officer, Eric Luedtke, said these threats have been a phenomenon across the country.

โ€œItโ€™s a phenomenon that has targeted election workers, regardless of political affiliation, race, gender, what roles theyโ€™re filling.โ€

The National Conference of State Legislatures says 14 states have enacted laws addressing protections for election officials since 2020.

If the bill passes, it would be law by May 14th, Marylandโ€™s primary.

Better yet, both a prison sentence and a fine. There is no excuse for threatening an election official; absolutely none.
