McDonough Performing Arts Marks 20th Anniversary Of ‘High School Musical Jr.’
McDonough High School

INDIAN HEAD, Md. McDonough High School’s Performing Arts Department will present a special 20th anniversary production of High School Musical Jr. on Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, and Saturday, Feb. 28, 2026, at 7 p.m.

The show brings together nine performing arts classes in a collaborative, cross-curricular project. Participating programs include CTE Theatre, Advanced Acting, Show Choir, Technical Theatre, Dance 2 and Jazz Band.

Organizers say the performance is designed for audiences of all ages and celebrates the enduring popularity of the Disney Channel musical, which first premiered in 2006. The junior adaptation features a condensed script and music tailored for student performers while maintaining the original themes of friendship, teamwork and challenging social expectations.

Set on the first day after winter break at East High, the story follows familiar campus cliques — Jocks, Brainiacs, Thespians and Skater Dudes — as basketball captain Troy and new student Gabriella disrupt the “status quo” by auditioning for the school musical. Their decision sparks tension but ultimately encourages classmates to step outside their comfort zones and discover their own talents.

Featuring upbeat, dance-driven numbers and a flexible cast structure, the production is designed to showcase a wide range of student-athletes and performers. With its modern school setting and accessible staging, the show provides opportunities for students across multiple grade levels to participate both on stage and behind the scenes.

Tickets are $10 for adults and $8 for children.
Advance tickets are available online at mhsdrama303.booktix.com.
