MECHANICSVILLE, Md. โ Authorities are investigating a Mechanicsville crash involving a suspected drunk driver early Saturday morning. A 60-year-old man allegedly struck a telephone pole with his vehicle and then fled the scene before first responders arrived.
The St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office received reports around 12:40 a.m. on August 9, 2025, for a single-vehicle collision in the 13000 block of Ryceville Road. It was reported that a 60-year-old male, who appeared to be under the influence, had hit a telephone pole. The driver reportedly sustained a leg injury in the collision.
Officials say after the collision, the driver drove away from the area in his damaged vehicle, which had a compromised driver’s side door. Leaving the scene of an accident is a serious offense in Maryland. The potential penalties increase significantly if a driver is also found to be under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Law enforcement and EMS personnel later located the driver. Medical crews evaluated the man for his reported injuries.
The investigation into the Mechanicsville crash and the suspected DUI is ongoing. Officials have not yet released the name of the driver or announced if charges will be filed.
