MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — A 63-year-old Mechanicsville man is facing multiple felony charges including attempted rape and first-degree assault after allegedly attacking a woman during a domestic dispute. Robert Lee Taylor Jr. was arrested and is being held without bond at St. Mary’s County Detention Center.

The incident occurred around 5 a.m. on Sept. 9, 2025 at a residence in the Mechanicsville area, according to St. Mary’s County officials. Charging documents state the dispute began as an argument over a household bill before escalating.

Court filings allege that Taylor physically restrained the victim and removed her clothing against her will. When she resisted, deputies wrote that he caused pain by twisting her arms and bending her fingers.

Police reports further allege that Taylor strangled the victim for several seconds while threatening to kill her. Charging documents state the victim reported she could not breathe and feared for her life. Court records show investigators believe Taylor then attempted to sexually assault her.

According to charging documents, the victim believed Taylor might retrieve a weapon and feared for her safety. When Taylor left the area, court records show the victim fled the residence in her vehicle and sought safety until Taylor departed.

Police wrote that the victim sought medical treatment at MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital, where Cpl. A. Edelen photographed visible injuries to her neck, chest and abdomen.

Deputies attempted to contact Taylor on Sept. 9 but were unsuccessful, according to police reports. He was arrested the following morning without incident.

During questioning, Taylor denied assaulting the victim, court documents state. Police wrote that he acknowledged a verbal dispute and claimed the victim threatened him with an object, but denied further physical contact.

Taylor faces charges of attempted first-degree rape, which carries a maximum penalty of life imprisonment, and attempted second-degree rape, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, according to Maryland statutes. The first-degree assault charge carries a maximum sentence of 25 years, while second-degree assault is punishable by up to 10 years imprisonment, according to state law.

Judge Karen Christy Holt ordered Taylor held without bond during his bail review hearing on Sept. 11, court records show. A preliminary hearing is scheduled for Oct. 10 in St. Mary’s County District Court in Leonardtown.

Detective Alexander Wynnyk investigated the case for the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office. The State’s Attorney’s Office for St. Mary’s County is prosecuting the case, according to court filings.

    1. It doesn’t look like Maryland liberals are tolerating anything in this case. The alleged offender has been arrested and will be prosecuted in the court system. Stop looking for political issues inside human tragedies.
