As part of the effort to enlighten the electorate about all the candidates running for office in Southern Maryland, TheBAYNET.com and Baynet Radio had held a series of interviews with candidates who have cleared time in their schedules to visit. One such candidate was Christ Davies running as the lone Democrat challenging Republican Anthony OโDonnell for the Delegate for District 29C.
When asked why he decided to run, Davies stated, “I’m running because Southern Maryland needs a Delegate who is committed to the health of the Bay, quality education for our children and creating jobs. Just being against everything doesn’t work. We need a strong, independent, fiscally conservative voice for Southern Maryland who can work with others in Annapolis to get things done, not just score political points.”
Davies, a teacher at Great Mills High School feels very strongly that education needs to be fully represented in Annapolis. โAs a public school teacher for over 20 years, I fully understand the difficult and unique challenges facing our schools. I believe there is never an excuse for education standards to be sacrificed or for our students to be short-changed. I will fight to protect our schools from drastic budget cuts, to increase education funding without raising taxes, and to freeze tuition rates at public colleges and universities so we can maintain the number 1 ranking we’ve worked so hard to achieve.โ
On the situation in Maryland and employment, Davies stated that โCreating quality, stable and good-paying jobs in Southern Maryland will be my number one priority. I will fight for tax policies that will encourage economic development and support polices that make it easier for small businesses to obtain the capital they need to grow and thrive. We need to cut the red tape and streamline permitting processes to help small businesses create jobs.โ
As part of his plan, Davies understands that many Marylanders have had to make some serious cuts to the way the live with the current economic troubles. โFamilies all across Maryland are making sacrifices. Our state government needs to do the same. I will go through our budget with a fine-tooth comb and eliminate wasteful spending. It is important that Maryland maintains its Triple-A bond rating and continues to set aside reserve funds so we have the resources to weather our ongoing economic recovery.โ
The candidate also thinks the legislature can do more to protect the bay and the local environment. โI believe the Chesapeake Bay is our region’s greatest resource. Unlike our current Delegate, I support the Chesapeake Bay 2010 Trust Fund to help clean up the Bay. As your Delegate, I will fight to crack down on polluters, protect our natural resources, and establish sustainable fisheries.โ
In addition to his position on the environment, education and the economy, Davies stated, โSafe neighborhoods and communities are our right. Police, fire and rescue need to be a top priority! Schools and town centers must be safe for all citizens. I will work hard to maintain and improve our communities. I will be a voice in Annapolis who will stand up for the interests of the people of Southern Maryland.โ
The candidate is proud of his record as a teacher and his military service in the Army. He feels that every citizen should do their part to keep the region strong, economically viable and safe.
