Democratic candidate for Charles County Commissioner made his way into Baynet Radio studios and the newsroom of TheBAYNET.com to present his candidacy. The professional communications expert and show personality stated that, “I’m not running for office, I’m running to serve the citizens of our community. I want to bring a ‘fresh voice’ to county government – yours.โ€

Lehan decided to run after watching from the sidelines for 25 years. I realized that the process is not a spectator sport, that the entire community needs to get involved; whether it is community service or charitable organization. One person canโ€™t change everything. This is especially true in government. However, one person can change the dynamic of a government body that convenes for the common good of its citizens.โ€

The candidate recently received the backing of The Education Association of Charles County for his views and approach to education. I am glad EACC members saw what I standย  for. I take the endorsement as a vote of confidence,โ€ said Lehan.

The admitted life-long Democrat stated that he is first and foremost a fiscal conservative and that the economy should be everyoneโ€™s priority. โ€œWe have to dig ourselves out. The next Board of Commissioners needs to be focused on recovery.โ€

Lehan cited recent layoffs and furloughs by Charles County as an area that needs more scrutiny. โ€œThey [BOCC] basically dismantled the Economic and Development Department in a time when we need to be focused on attracting more employers and jobs to the area as part of a recovery effort. Without a department dedicated to that goal, recruiting is a problem.โ€

He feels that with all the opportunities available to businesses in Charles County that businesses may be looking to relocate and that the Economic Development Department should be working hard to get the word out. โ€œWe have an industrial park in western Waldorf area that has plenty of facilities including a hotel,โ€ said Lehan. โ€œThere are beautiful yet almost empty Class A office space areas in White Plains and La Plata which would be perfect for many businesses.โ€

Another area of concern to Lehan is accessible transparency. When I worked for Charles County as its Public Information Officer, each time I tried to bring up the subject I was challenged every step of the way. That experience inspired me to do better. I learned a lot and hope to be able to turn that knowledge into a philosophy and practice when in office. I intend to reach out to the community. Every citizen is a stakeholder in the workings of their government.โ€

As an example of improving transparency, Lehan mentioned that at least once per month the BOCC should hold their regular work meeting in the evening so residents have a chance to participate in the process. โ€œCalvert County does this with great success and we could do it here. Most people are busy working during the normal meeting times.โ€

โ€œI am a passionate fiscal conservative and I truly believe that it is time to act accordingly, to treat the government budget like it is the peopleโ€™s money.&
