LA PLATA, Md. — Focused eyes, steady hands, and quiet determination filled the gym at Milton M. Somers Middle School on Nov. 13, as students from across the county took aim in the 2025 Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) Middle School Archery Tournament.

The annual event brings together top-performing archers from each of the county’s public middle schools. Students are selected through their physical education classes, where they qualify during in-school competitions before representing their schools at the district level. The tournament celebrates both team and individual excellence in one of the district’s athletic offerings.

The twin brothers, Albert “Albie” and Rowan Williams, were both selected as the sixth-grade boys’ picks for the Somers archery team—an impressive dual achievement that added an extra layer of excitement for their family.

“I was surprised when Albie and Rowan were both selected for the Somers archery team—and shocked when they came out on top! I’m really proud of how much work they put into developing their skill and hope they continue with the sport. It was so much fun seeing all the schools come together to celebrate the students’ dedication.” — Chelsea Haddway-Williams, mother of Rowan Williams

Davis Middle School followed in second with 1,083 points, and Mattawoman Middle School rounded out the top three with 920 points. Matthew Henson Middle School placed fourth, Milton M. Somers Middle School finished fifth, and Benjamin Stoddert Middle School came in sixth.

“The archery students at Davis have worked diligently to learn proper shooting technique. For many of them, this season was their first opportunity to handle a bow, yet they approached the challenge with determination and a strong eagerness to grow as archers.” — Brett Gerhart, Physical Education Teacher, Theodore G.
