St. Maryโ€™s County District 2 Commissioner incumbent, Mike Hewitt, recently visited TheBayNetโ€™s offices for an interview. The Republican commissioner discussed why heโ€™s seeking re-election, the economy, the airport, and transportation.

Mike Hewitt grew up in St. Maryโ€™s. He owned and operated Hewittโ€™s Service Center for 38 years with wife Elaine before selling it in 2017. Hewitt has served on the St. Maryโ€™s County Planning Commission, Board of Education, and the Zoning Board of Appeals among several other positions in the community.

On Hewittโ€™s website he outlines what he has helped accomplish in his first term as a St. Maryโ€™s County Commissioner, he has โ€œworked hard to keep taxes low while providing high-quality services.โ€ He and the current board have โ€œ[broke] ground on a new Leonardtown Library, new Garvey Senior Center, new boat ramp on the Patuxent River at Clarkeโ€™s Landing, new waterfront park at Snow Hill Farm in Hollywood and finish renovations to the Patuxent River Naval Air Museum.โ€ His website also touts โ€œthe highest rating given by the auditing firm of Murphy & Murphy.โ€ As a result of expenses being โ€œunder projections in every category.โ€

Hewitt has a hardline stance against taxes and fees, opposing โ€œall tax increases and all new fees.โ€ He also supports โ€œschool choice and charter schools,โ€ while being against a โ€œone-size-fits-all CORE curriculum.โ€

Election day for the 2018 Gubernatorial election is November 6, 2018. Please check the Maryland voter service website here to find your polling location.
