Did you see a group of people running along Route 4 carrying an American flag on Saturday, May 23?

Over thirty members of Calvert CrossFit participated in a workout called “Murph” in memory of Navy Lieutenant Michael Murphy who was killed in Afghanistan in June 2005.

Some of the named CrossFit workouts are Hero WODs (Workout Of the Day) and are among the most intense workouts you could experience. It is intended to be performed with intense effort in honor of fallen Heroes.

Murph is traditionally done during Memorial Day weekend and consists of a 1 mile run, 100 pull-ups, 200 push-ups, 300 squats, and another 1 mile run.

Athletes don’t think of themselves when completing Hero WODs; they think of the Hero that has given his all for our freedom. Many members got together the evening before Murph to watch Lone Survivor, the movie showing Navy SEALs Marcus Luttrell (Mark Wahlberg), Michael Murphy (Taylor Kitsch), Danny Dietz (Emile Hirsch) and Matthew “Axe” Axelson (Ben Foster) as they deploy on a mission of surveillance and to take out Taliban leader Ahmad Shah.

Finish times ranged from around 35 minutes to over 70 minutes, but everyone started together, completed the entire workout, and encouraged those still working until the very end. Proceeds from t-shirt sales were donated to The Murph Challenge.
