NEWBURG, Md. LifeStyles of Maryland has officially opened Southern Crossing, a first-of-its-kind transitional housing facility in Southern Maryland, transforming the once-abandoned White House Motel on U.S. 301 into a place of dignity, safety and second chances.

The north wing, featuring 10 private housing units, is the first phase of the project, with more units planned. Southern Crossing aims to serve individuals and families experiencing homelessness or living on the brink — offering not just housing, but structure and support to help them move forward.

“This project is not only to serve those who are homeless, but also those who are just barely making it,” said Chief Operating Officer Corae Young. “We’re giving them an opportunity to rebirth themselves.”

The ribbon-cutting ceremony on a hot June day drew dozens of community leaders and supporters. Among those in attendance were the Charles County Chamber of Commerce, local elected officials, and representatives from partner organizations such as Wells Fargo and the Wills Group.

Sandy Washington, CEO of LifeStyles of Maryland, saw not just a vacant building, but an opportunity for growth and transformation.

“This motel was empty, broken, drug-infested, and everyone thought it was no good,” Washington said. “People just discarded it, the same way they discard so many of the people we serve. … I’m telling you, put a little investment in people. They’re worth it.”

The ceremony also included a personal tribute from Chamber President Kathy Guzman, who shared how she once turned to LifeStyles for support herself. Rep. Steny Hoyer’s office presented an American flag to fly over the site, and Charles County Commissioners President Reuben Collins offered the official county seal. Wells Fargo surprised attendees with an additional $85,000 donation to support the housing program.

Southern Crossing will offer more than shelter. Residents will receive guidance through LifeStyles’ Coordinated Entry System, as well as life skills training, case management and support toward permanent housing.

“Our goal is to provide a learning environment in a supportive manner, while also providing households the dignity and respect they deserve to live autonomously,” Young said.

The completed facility is expected to include additional phases, with the capacity to house up to 77 residents for a maximum stay of 18 months. In addition to private living spaces, residents will receive access to career training, life skills education and personalized support as they transition toward permanent housing and independence.
