PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — The Calvert County Board of Education (BOE) approved the contract for a new playground at Huntingtown Elementary at their Oct. 23 meeting. The contract was awarded to Gametime/Cunningham Recreation. The update promises “inclusive, safe, and stimulating equipment that supports student safety and well-being.”

The update will include installation of proposed playground equipment, supply and installation of pour-in-place rubber surfacing, and removal and disposal of existing playground equipment, with the exception of three freestanding Playworld components and Miracle Swings. The swings will be relocated to another part of the playground.

The budget for the project is $408,747.43 and includes a $67,204.37 grant from Gametime. The new playground will be funded from the school’s Capital Improvement Program budget.

In addition, the new playground will be compliant with standards of the Americans with Disabilities Act. CCPS previously worked with Gametime on Plum Point Elementary’s playground renovation, and Huntingtown Elementary’s playground will follow similar guidelines and have similar equipment installed. Some inclusive features include a braille panel and a communication board, ramp access, and a therapeutic rings attachment.

“The completion of this playground will include an ADA-compliant path to the playground, and the entire playground will be ADA accessible,” Director of Planning and Construction Shuchita Warner said.

A timeline on the project was not immediately clear from the presentation.
