Leonardtown, MD — Itโs official. Daniel Carney was sworn in Nov. 24 as a new member of the St. Maryโs County Board of Education to fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Marilyn Crosby in September.
Carney (shown) was chosen; last week by the county commissioners from a list of 34 applicants. After his swearing-in by Clerk of the Court Joan Williams, Carney participated in his first board meeting.
Carney will be on the board until the election one year from now. In the meantime he told The BayNet he is undecided about running for election for a four-year term. Deadline for filing is February 3, 2016. Carney said he has been known as a firefighter, coming in and effecting change, in his previous employment that included a career in the U.S. Coast Guard.
Carney was formerly the school systemโs Chief Financial Officer, having been hired by then-superintendent Pat Richardson and continued under Dr. Michael Martirano. Richardson attended the swearing-in ceremony.
The new school board member is now retired and serves on the countyโs ethics and economic development commissions.
