WALDORF, Md. — Questions continue to circulate across Charles County as residents look for updates on Kaiser Permanente’s planned medical center in Waldorf.

The BayNet reached out to Kaiser Permanente for an update on the long-discussed project, as concerns grow locally about the lack of visible progress.

In a statement provided Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Kaiser Permanente said it is still reviewing its plans.

“Kaiser Permanente continues to assess options to expand access to high-quality, affordable care in Charles County and neighboring counties. We will share more details as they are confirmed.”

The project was first announced in December 2020, when the health system purchased a 23-acre site at the intersection of Crain Highway and Billingsley Road with plans to build a $100 million, multi-phase medical center.

“As the region’s leading integrated health system and largest nonprofit health care organization, we look forward to bringing award-winning doctors and our innovative care delivery system to Charles County,” said Ruth Williams-Brinkley, region president, Kaiser Permanente, in the announcement. “This acquisition is part of our aggressive expansion plan that aims to provide current and future members with conveniently located high-quality care.”

According to the original announcement, the facility was expected to be approximately 100,000 square feet and include primary care, specialty services, imaging, laboratory services, pharmacy and 24/7 advanced urgent care. The first phase was projected to open in early 2025.

During a September 2023 presentation to the Charles County Commissioners, Kaiser Permanente outlined a revised target opening of 2026 for the Waldorf medical center, noting the project’s master plan allows for future expansion as demand grows. At the time, officials said approximately 17,000 Kaiser Permanente members lived in Charles County, with the facility expected to handle about 100,000 visits annually.

At the time, the development was also expected to bring approximately 300 jobs to the area and expand access to care for more than 14,000 Kaiser Permanente members already living in Charles County, with membership projected to grow significantly.

County officials previously highlighted the project as a major addition to the region’s healthcare infrastructure, citing both economic and public health benefits tied to increased access to care.
