Quick Response Stops Motel Fire From Spreading In Great Mills

LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — Firefighters quickly contained a late-morning fire at the A&E Motel in Lexington Park on Wednesday, preventing the blaze from spreading beyond a single room.

The fire was reported around 11:20 a.m. on March 25, 2026, at the motel located at 21646 Great Mills Road, after multiple 911 callers reported black smoke and visible flames coming from inside a room. The occupant was able to safely exit before crews arrived.

Firefighters made entry and found a mattress on fire with flames extending to clothing and other contents inside the room. Crews quickly extinguished the fire within minutes of arrival, preventing it from spreading to adjacent units.

Approximately 29 personnel responded to the scene, including units from Bay District stations and surrounding mutual aid companies. Crews checked for fire extension and searched adjoining rooms to ensure no further hazards were present.

During the search, one cat was found deceased inside the affected room, and a second cat remains unaccounted for.

Due to the rapid extinguishment and lack of extension, crews began scaling back operations within minutes. The fire was officially placed under control at approximately 12:15 p.m., with no extension to neighboring units. No injuries were reported.

This marks the second fire of the day that first responders and fire marshals investigated in St. Mary’s County, following an earlier house fire in Scotland.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause of the fire.
