One person was injured in a second accident on Route 4 in Dunkirk within an hour of the first on Sunday morning. At approximately 4:50 am, emergency responders were called to an area about one-quarter mile south of Skinners Turn Road.
A vehicle apparently hit the guardrails and then went airborne over the railing.ย After that, the vehicle traveled about another 250 feet through the woods and a brush area and then into an open field.ย Once the vehicle stopped, the front vehicle axles came apart from the vehicle and went about another 50 feet from where the vehicle stopped.ย But that is not all — the engine went about another 20 feet past the front axle.
It is unknown at time of this report if the vehicle went end-over-end or slid when it went over the guardrail from going airborne, although it is believed that the vehicle went end-over-end until it stopped.
Witnesses at the scene believe there was only the driver in the vehicle.ย The driver seemed to have some problem answering that question at first.ย There was a search of the area, but no other person was found.
The driver was flown out by helicopter to a hospital.
The northbound lane was closed fromย 4:50ย to aboutย 6:30 am.ย The southbound lane was closed while the helicopter used that roadway as a landing zone to transport driver to hospital.
