Prince Frederick, MD – A 61-year-old man was injured in an early evening house fire Tuesday, March 8 in Calvert County, state officials reported. The fire occurred at a single-story home on Adelina Court and was discovered by a neighbor and reported shortly before 7 p.m.

According to the Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Office, 25 firefighters from Prince Frederick (Company 2) were dispatched to the one-alarm fire and brought the blaze under control in one hour.

โ€œThe occupants were home at the time of the fire,โ€ a fire marshalโ€™s press release stated. โ€œA 61-year-old male sustained burns to his body and was flown to Washington Burn Center. The other occupant of the home is being assisted by family members.โ€

Damage to the house is estimated at $55,000. The Fire Marshalโ€™s Office identified the owner/occupant as Vale Thomas.

On Thursday, March 10, Company 2 officials reported that the injured man had rescued his brother and a dog in the fire.

โ€œA further investigation revealed one of the brothers sprang into action, running into the burning home to rescue his own brother, who is believed to be blind,โ€ company officials reported. โ€œThe same brother also successfully rescued the family dog. Although the seeing-impaired brother and dog appeared to be okay on the scene, the brother who made the rescues was not.โ€

On Thursday, Company 2 officials said of the injured man, โ€œhis current status is unclear at this time.โ€ Fire officials also reported the home appears to be a total loss as a result of the fire since โ€œthe integrity of the structure was significantly compromised.โ€

Anyone with information that might aid authorities in the investigation of this incident is asked to contact The Maryland State Fire Marshalโ€™s Southern Regional Office at 443-550-6835.
