The Optimist Club of Calvert Prince Frederick held its annual banquet honoring students deemed Calvert County’s “Outstanding Youth” as part of Optimist International’s “Youth Appreciation Week.”

 

This year the local club saluted 40 students—10 students each from Calvert County’s four public high schools—Monday, Nov. 18 at St. John Vianney Family Life Center in Prince Frederick.

The honorees are selected by the club with the aid of school guidance counselors.  Selectors weigh academic achievement plus school and community activities.

The following are the 2013 honorees from Northern High School (NHS).

Ian M. Bonanno is a member of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and the Academy of Finance. Bonanno also belongs to the Young Democrats, the Model United Nations Club and the Key Club. He plans to attend Georgetown University, major in foreign affairs/international relations and pursue a career in the State Department’s diplomatic service.

Kaela S. Boyden is a member of Minority Scholars, the Movie Club and the Chesapeake Bay/Terrapin Club. Boyden plays varsity tennis and volleyball, runs track and was a Prince George’s County Circuit Court intern. She plans to attend the University of Maryland, major in bio-cultural anthropology and pursue a career as a forensic pathologist.

Amanda L. Coleman is the president of the National Art Honor Society and a member of the Symphonic Band and Key Club. Coleman is a vacation Bible school leader and a Special Olympics volunteer. She plans to attend the University of North Carolina Greensboro, major in marine biology and “have a job that I will enjoy going to every day and start a family of my own.”

Rachel E. Cooper received the FBLA Outstanding Junior Award. Cooper is a member of Student Government, the Key Club and the varsity swim team. She plans to attend Temple University, major in communications/mass media and pursue and career in radio broadcasting.

Janine K. Ivy is president of the Young Democrats, the Women’s Studies Club and has received several awards, including the Sandra Day O’Connor Award for Advan
