
Hollywood, MD – Old-time music duo Annie & Mac will perform in concert at the HomeSpun Coffee House Friday, Feb. 23 at 7:30 p.m. The concert is sponsored by Southern Maryland Traditional Music and Dance (SMTMD) and will be held at Christ Church Parish Hall on Zach Fowler Road in Chaptico. Annie & Mac have been performing together for almost 20 years. In 2014 they were inducted into Americaโs Old Time Country Music Hall of Fame. Mac plays claw-hammer style banjo, harmonica, and Cajun accordion; Annie plays rhythm guitar. Admission is $10 for SMTMD members; $15 for non-members. Light refreshments will be provided. Historic Sotterley Plantation
Sotterley is kicking off itโs 2018 โOur Year of Explorationโ endeavor and is announcing these upcoming events โ Feb. 24: in commemoration of the life of Agnes Kane Callum (1925-2015) Sotterleyโs Board of Trustees has proclaimed her birthday be named in her honor. Sotterley Plantation has opened its only remaining slave cabin to the public and has dedicated it to the memory of Agnes Kane Callum, a genealogist whose own grandfather was a slave here. March 3: A 90-minute tour of the mansion, as seen through the eyes of the women of Sotterley as full participants in our American story will be held. (Advance ticket purchase required for this event by consulting the website at www.sotterley.org. March 17: Volunteer at Sotterley for potato planting! On St. Patrickโs Day, Sotterley is calling for a community day of planting potatoes which will be donated to local food pantries. (Rain date is March 24). Be sure to dress appropriately for this weather-dependent event. Sotterleyโs Guided Tour Season runs from May 1 through Oct. 31. The Visitor Center and Plantation House are now closed for the winter season; the grounds are open year-round. Trails, Exhibits and Gardens are open Tuesdays through Saturdays from 10 a .m. to 4 p.m. (Sundays, noon to 4 pm.) Membersโ admission fee is free. A Sotterley Day Pass to Grounds (self-guided tour) when the Visitor Center is open is $5; $3 when the Visitor Center is closed. The Perfect February Dessert, Strawberry Jam Squares’ Ingredients โ PAM, ยฝ cup butter. Softened, 1 cup brown sugar, 1 and ยฝ cups flour, 1 tsp. salt, ยฝ tsp. baking soda, 1 and ยฝ cups uncooked Quick Quaker Oats, 1 10- to 12-ounce jar of strawberry jam (you may substitute raspberry jam; for George Washingtonโs birthday you may substitute cherry jam โ or you may substitute any favorite jam for this recipe), 1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts. Directions: Cream butter and sugar; add dry ingredients and mix. Spread ยพ of the dough in a 9โ X 13โ baking pan that has been sprayed with PAM; pat dough down. Spread the jam over the dough, and then sprinkle with remaining dough adding nuts on top. Bake at 375 degrees for 25 minutes. Cool slightly; cut into squares. Serve warm.
