Active barricade situation in Lusby

Lusby, MD – On Tuesday, Jan. 17 at approximately 12:40 p.m. the Calvert County Sheriffโ€™s Office received a call from a third party indicating there was an adult male at a residence on White Sands Drive threatening to harm himself with a shotgun. Patrol units arrived and attempted to make contact with the individual.ย 

While patrol deputies were on the scene, contact was made with the suspect by phone. He indicated he was not coming out, and he would shoot anyone that came to his door.ย  Deputies learned there was also an adult female in the house. The female was able to escape out the front door while the deputies were talking to the suspect on the phone.ย  The suspect reiterated several times he would shoot anyone who came to the door. At one point during the siege the suspect came out on the porch holding a handgun before returning inside the residence. Special Operations Team members eventually placed chemical munitions into the house causing the suspect to surrender to the deputies.ย 

Sheriff Mike Evans stated, โ€œThe deputies on the scene utilized great tactics and decision making skills that allowed the situation to end as peacefully as possible.โ€ย 

The suspect was taken to Calvert Memorial Hospital for an evaluation. Several charges are pending.


UPDATE Jan. 17 at 2:36 p.m.

Lusby, MD – Police have a man in custody following a 90 minute barricade at a residence in the White Sands subdivision of Lusby. Captain David Payne of the Calvert County Sheriff’s Office reported the standoff began around 12:40 p.m. when a man went to a residence in White Sands and began making threats.

He then barricaded himself in a residence. An elderly woman was in the house but later managed to escape unharmed.

Police conducted lengthy negotiations with the unidentified man, trying to get him to surrender. Payne said the man, who was in possession of several weapons, made threats against the woman in the house and police.

At one point during the siege he stepped outside brandishing a gun before returning to the house. Special Operations Team members subsequently fired gas containers into the residence. The man then walked out of the house and surrendered to police.

The perpetrator has been transported to Calvert Memorial Hospital for an evaluation.
