Posey Blames Media For Backlash

Housing activist Cornell Posey, facing criminal charges, used a public forum to criticize the media for exposing the allegations during the Charles County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday. The report, which ran in the Wednesday, May 16, 2012 Maryland Independent, stated that Posey was facing felony charges for check fraud.

 

During the forum, Posey attacked a reporter from the Maryland Independent for running the article, saying the sole intent of the article was to bash him. The article discussed the charges Posey faced. Posey is seeking approval from the Board of County Commissioners to pay him to conduct a survey on the housing conditions in the Nanjemoy community.

 

“I come here today to ask the board to be fair of this proposal that I sent,” Posey said. “I have the owner here today. He’s outstanding. I have Bill Murray. There was an article in the paper last week which was, it came out less than 24 hours, very disappointing. I didn’t come here with buses or vans with a lot of people. A lot of people wanted to come. For the last two months, we’ve been patient trying to work with the county. We didn’t want to be part of the problem; we wanted to be part of the solution. I came up with a proposal. All I was going to do was do the outreach. The article said some negative things about me, didn’t touch on the proposal.

 

“Yes, in 2009, my house burned down. I had kids living there. Lightning hit my house. I had a disagreement with the insurance company. We had the first rally since 1963. I’ve done a lot. But the last ten months, we were trying to work with the county. We had the governor here, rode with Candice, Reuben and Debra Davis. I wanted to start this program. This project in Najmemoy, it’s been on TV, FOX News. Nanjemoy wasn’t the only place that doesn’t have indoor plumbing; we were going to (branch out). I wanted to do door-to-door so everybody who needs help could be part of the whole program. 

 

“I was disappointed in the article. If you throw punches, you’ve got to take punches. They said one of the commissioners congratulated the lady who wrote the article. I don’t understand why you would congratulate her when her whole article was to bash me. I’m here to ask the county commissioners to give the group a fair opportunity. I’ve seen the studies for the last eight years. The article’s negative. I just want you to be fair.”
