LEXINGTON PARK, Md. — On Sept. 22, 2025, a St. Mary’s County grand jury indicted Maliq Rasheed McGill, 23, of Lexington Park, on charges including theft of property valued between $1,500 and $25,000, illegal possession of a firearm, possession of a rifle after a disqualifying crime, and possession of a stolen firearm.

According to court documents, on July 9, 2025, McGill allegedly broke into his mother’s locked bedroom and stole her Daniel Defense AR-15 rifle. The victim reported returning home to find that the lock on her bedroom door had been removed and her firearm was missing.

Around 2 p.m. on July 9, witnesses stated in charging documents that they observed McGill leaving the property through the back door carrying bags and what appeared to be the AR-15 rifle. Later, McGill reportedly called his mother and stated he was in Prince George’s County, where he claimed he was assaulted by multiple individuals who then stole the firearm from him.

Court records show McGill was previously convicted of conspiracy to commit robbery, which prohibits him from legally possessing firearms under state law. If convicted, McGill faces up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for the theft charge. Illegal possession of a regulated firearm and possession of a stolen firearm each carry penalties of up to five years in prison and a $10,000 fine. Possession of a rifle after a disqualifying crime carries a maximum penalty of 15 years in prison.

McGill’s trial is scheduled for Jan. 20, 2025.

  1. You know Maryland is serious when the media uses the word ‘COULD’ when talking about the possibility of a convicted felon going to jail, after being caught with a stolen firearm. That’s confidence in our twisted justice system.

  2. Mom needs to lock her bedroom door when she is not at home. Guess she knows she could not trust her own son. Shameful.

  3. I have an idea, just leave him in jail until he dies. he is useless to the community and society.
