(Waldorf, MD., May 9, 2017) – The Southern Maryland Blue Crabs (10-9) won game two of their three-game series 12-9 against the Lancaster Barnstormers (10-9) in 10 innings on Tuesday.
Southern Maryland’s starter, Daryl Thompson, struggled early giving up two homeruns in the bottom of the first. With two outs in the inning, Sean Halton and K.C. Hobson hit back-to-back solo homers, putting the Barnstormers ahead 2-0. The Lancaster lead extended in the second inning, when Anderson De La Rosa hit a two-run homerun, putting the lead at 4-0.
The Blue Crabs cut into the lead in the third inning, when an error from Lancaster allowed Mike Blanke to score from third. The Barnstormers lead grew to 5-1 in the fourth inning, when Darian Sanford singled in Trayvon Robinson.
The Blue Crabs bats exploded in the fifth inning, putting up eight runs, and taking a 9-5 lead. The big blows in the inning came on a grand slam from Zach Wilson, and then a two-run shot from Patrick Palmiero two batters later. The Barnstormers cut back into the lead, when Halton hit his second solo homerun of the game, bringing the game to 9-6.
Lancaster added another run in the bottom of the seventh, when Caleb Gindl singled in Sanford. The Barnstormers then tied the game in the eighth inning, with two runs off of setup man Jesse Beal. A Kevin Ahrens triple scored Robinson, before a two-out error off the bat of Sanford allowed Ahrens to tie the game.
After a scoreless ninth inning, the Blue Crabs headed to extra innings for the third time this season. Edwin Garcia led off the 10th inning with a walk and was sacrificed over to second. After a Gary Brown single and Danny Muno hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Wilson picked up his fifth and sixth RBI’s of the game on a single. Zach Cone added another insurance run, when he singled in Danny Muno, bringing the score to 12-9.
Closer Cody Eppley (S,7) came in for the save in the bottom of the inning. Eppley struck out two of three batters, putting the Barnstormers down in order. The win improved Southern Maryland to 10-9 on the season, and move into a tie with Lancaster for second in the Freedom Division.
The Blue Crabs return to action Wednesday, May 10th in the finale of the three-game series on the road against the Barnstormers. Southern Maryland will send RHP Brian Grening (1-0, 3.15 ERA) to the mound, looking to clinch the series. He will face-off against Lancaster’s RHP Bryan Evans (0-1, 5.40 ERA), making his fourth start of the season. First pitch is scheduled for 11:00 A.M. on Saturday at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
