UPPER MARLBORO, Md. — Prince George’s County police are warning residents about a sharp rise in robberies connected to online marketplace sales, as suspects increasingly use social media platforms to lure victims into dangerous meetups.
Police say investigators have recorded about two dozen robberies tied to online marketplace transactions over the past three months, already far exceeding the roughly 10 similar cases reported during all of last year.
Authorities say suspects often pose as buyers or sellers on platforms such as Facebook Marketplace and other online marketplaces, arranging in-person meetings before robbing victims. In some cases, suspects have used counterfeit money or weapons during the encounters.
The items involved in the incidents vary widely, including tools, shoes, coats, televisions, video game systems and even vehicles. The robberies have occurred throughout the county, including in communities such as Hyattsville, College Park and Oxon Hill.
In one reported case, police said a victim agreed to sell a $10,000 watch for $1,000 before being robbed during the meeting.
Several suspects have been arrested in connection with the robberies, but police say the recent spike is concerning and are urging residents to take precautions when arranging online sales.
Police recommend completing transactions in public, well-lit areas and note that residents can meet buyers or sellers at local police stations, where lobby areas are open to the public and monitored.
Authorities say residents should remain cautious of deals that appear unusually good.
The investigation into the robberies remains ongoing.
