Propane Tank Explosion Injures Construction Worker In La Plata

LA PLATA, Md. — A construction worker was severely injured Friday morning when a propane tank exploded at a residential building site in La Plata, Maryland.

The incident occurred on October 25, 2024 around 9:06 a.m. in the area of Bennett Brae Place and Mitchell Road. According to local fire and rescue personnel, a piece of machinery struck a propane tank, igniting a fire that engulfed the surrounding area.

The 29-year-old male operator suffered second and third-degree burns from the waist up, primarily on his face and arms. He was airlifted by Maryland State Police, Trooper 2 helicopter to MedStar Burn Center for treatment.

Firefighters contained the blaze, which had spread to a 20-by-20-foot area, while the propane tank continued to burn for about an hour. The home under construction was not significantly damaged due to the quick response from local volunteer firefighters.

Local authorities have notified Aero Gas and the Office of the State Fire Marshal about the incident. An investigation into the explosion is ongoing.
