SAINT MARY’S COUNTY, Md., – A large brush fire is actively being battled near Salem State Forest, located off Indian Bridge Road, California, Maryland. Initially dispatched around 8:34 a.m. on Sunday, March 23, emergency responders from multiple jurisdictions have been working to contain the blaze, now estimated to span approximately four to five acres.

Early reports indicated the fire covered around one to two acres and was slowly spreading toward Route 4. The Maryland Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and local forestry units were quickly notified. Initial responding units included Bay District Volunteer Fire Department and various command and utility vehicles.

Within the first hour, the situation escalated significantly. Multiple spot fires began erupting, complicating firefighting efforts. Additional resources were called in, including brush task forces and specialized forestry equipment. Two forestry dozers were dispatched to assist firefighters on the ground, working to create fire breaks and prevent further spread.

Emergency crews established a critical water supply from nearby hydrant systems located in the Elizabeth Hills subdivision and the Long Bow subdivision, requiring additional support to manage water operations efficiently. Police were called to the area to assist with traffic control after reports indicated several near-collisions involving civilian vehicles and firefighting equipment along Indian Bridge Road.

Maryland State Police aviation support (Trooper 7) was requested to conduct an aerial survey to assist in assessing the fire’s scale and spread, but it was unavailable. Command subsequently arranged alternative aerial support.

Due to increasing concerns and firefighting logistics, Indian Bridge Road has been closed between Grammas Lane and Wallace Lane. Citizens are advised to avoid the area to allow unobstructed access for emergency personnel.

By late morning, firefighting crews had made progress containing active flames, focusing efforts on numerous remaining hotspots. No injuries or structural damages have been reported at this time.

Responders from both St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties continue actively managing the scene. Additional updates will be provided as further information becomes available.
