Raymond Francis Murphy, born March 5, 1947, in Washington, D.C., passed away on October 6, 2025. Ray grew up in Southeast D.C., graduated from St. John’s High School, and attended St. Bernards College. During his senior year of college he was drafted and faithfully served in the United States Marine Corps, stationed at Twentynine Palms, California.
Ray spent his entire professional career with Blue Cross Blue Shield in Washington, D.C. At 35, he became a single father and, with the unwavering support of his mother (“Nana”), devoted himself to raising his three children. He loved the outdoors—especially hunting and fishing—and loved spending time on his Eastern Shore property, where he, family, and friends gathered for annual hunting trips. He enjoyed playing softball and volleyball, ran a half-marathon, and coached numerous adult and youth teams over the years, including women’s and girls’ softball and boys’ soccer. He was also a big fan of Washington sports, especially the Redskins and the Capitals. Above all, Ray loved his family.
Ray is survived by his children: Heather Ostrom; Sarah Pobst (husband, Ken); and Andrew Murphy (wife, Tiffany). He was the proud grandfather of eleven grandchildren: Alexandra Pobst, Megan Pobst, Logan Pobst, Ryder Pobst, Fayth Murphy, Kendall Murphy, Brady Murphy, Sarah Ostrom, Issac Ostrom, Derek Ostrom, and Ahavah Ostrom.
He is also survived by his siblings: Joyce Greskovic (husband, Eddie), Eileen Buchanan (husband, Butch), and Rob Murphy (wife, Tammy). He was preceded in death by his parents, Rita and Robert Murphy, and by his brother, Gerald “Gerry” Murphy.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on October 17, 2025, at Brinsfield Funeral Homes in Charlotte Hall, MD.
In lieu of flowers or donations spend some time outdoors and think of Ray.
