Imagine living in a small tight-knit community where people knew their neighbors, where the country store was the center of community life, and where life revolved around the tides and the seasons! How much has life changed in the small riverside town of Solomons Island, and how much has stayed the same?ย  Visit the official opening of a new, temporary photography exhibit, Solomons Then and Now on Friday, March 6, at the Calvert Marine Museum.ย

Using photographs of Solomons dating back fifty to one hundred years, paired with current photographs of the same site, the exhibit is a revealing snapshot of this small riverside town. Images of the construction of the Thomas Johnson Bridge, Websterโ€™s Store, sailing schooners in the harbor, Model-T Fords parked in front of the Rekarโ€™s Hotel and, the Evans Moving Picture & Amusement Pier, now the Solomons Pier Restaurant, all bring back memories for those who grew up in this area.ย  Visitors are invited to write down those memories and submit them to the museum through the web site at www.calvertmarinemuseum.com. Some will be chosen to become an ongoing part of this community exhibit.ย

The official opening will be held at the museumโ€™s First Free Friday event on March 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. when the museum is open free to the public. Museum staff will be available to talk about the exhibit, and Richard Dodds, Curator of Maritime History, will be on hand to sign his book, Islands in a River: Solomons and Broomes Island, Maryland, which served as the inspiration for the exhibit. ย
