CALLAWAY, Md. — SoMar Drummers has opened its registration period for its winter drum clinics, which will take place on Jan. 24, Jan. 31 and Feb. 7 at King’s Christian Academy in Callaway from 10:30 a.m. to noon.
The clinic is open to beginning and intermediate drummers, and organizers say online that no experience is needed to register or attend the clinic. Drumsticks will be provided, and participants can keep them when the clinic is over.
Young drummers ages 5–16 are eligible to participate in the clinics and can choose to attend one, two or all three days. The cost is $50 per day or $125 for all three days. Anyone interested in the clinic can register online or learn more at the SoMar Drummers website.
The clinic is designed for beginners and intermediate drummers who want to work on fundamentals and avoid developing bad habits that could hamper their drumming technique and abilities down the line. The clinic will focus on those foundational skills, including:
- Proper stick grip and posture
- Basic rhythm reading (the universal language of music)
- Essential drum beats and fills
- Tips for buying your first drum set on a budget
- How to set up the drums properly
The website also promises that participants can learn four songs at their first clinic. SoMar aims to create a supportive learning environment to help musicians grow and to encourage kids to explore their creativity. It’s one of the fastest-growing organizations of its kind in the area and boasts a large summer camp that attracts drummers from around the world.
