PRINCE FREDERICK, Md. — In light of major weather events both at home and across the country, the Calvert Board of County Commissioners hopes to remind residents of the resources available to help.

Meals on Wheels is one such organization. Meals on Wheels is a nationwide program known for providing nutritious meals for homebound individuals, primarily seniors. One of the organization’s services is to deliver frozen or shelf-stable meals in advance of major weather events, like snowstorms or hurricanes.

Calvert’s Meals on Wheels group is made up entirely of volunteers. They’re dedicated to providing one home-delivered midday meal to homebound persons, five days a week. According to County Commissioner Todd Ireland, Meals on Wheels of Calvert said on Tuesday, July 15, in advance of the public board meeting, that they were “more than willing” to come help out if anyone was stuck due to a weather event.

Severe weather doesn’t strictly mean major storms. People can be housebound because of excessive heat or cold, or because conditions are too icy for them to walk or drive, for example.

People who are older, have limited mobility or are otherwise housebound are most vulnerable during severe weather events. Seniors and people with limited mobility have a hard time evacuating and getting the resources they need to survive if they don’t evacuate. They typically account for the majority of deaths in severe weather events.

Commissioners also encouraged residents to download and preview the Calvert Prepare app.
