MECHANICSVILLE, Md. — What began as a report of a vehicle traveling aggressively and crossing into oncoming lanes on a busy Sunday afternoon escalated into a series of criminal charges after deputies say the driver appeared impaired, was allegedly in possession of suspected drug paraphernalia, and later became combative with detention staff. The incident left a 48-year-old Accokeek woman facing multiple charges, including second-degree assault on a Department of Corrections employee, according to authorities.

According to court records, Buffy J. Monoplli, 48, of Accokeek, was charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance (CDS) not cannabis, two counts of possession of CDS paraphernalia and second-degree assault of a Department of Corrections employee. Court records indicate Monoplli posted a $1,000 bond on Dec. 22, 2025. The charges stem from multiple traffic violations reported the previous day.

According to the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office (SMCSO), deputies responded on Dec. 21, 2025, at approximately 4:29 p.m. to a traffic complaint reporting a vehicle driving aggressively on Budds Creek Road and traveling on the wrong side of the roadway. Deputies located a vehicle matching the description and initiated a traffic stop.

Deputies reported making contact with Monoplli and observed that she appeared emotional and had glassy eyes. Deputies stated they detected an odor of alcohol, which they reported became stronger as the interaction continued.

According to police documents, Monoplli agreed to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which deputies allege she did not complete satisfactorily. She was subsequently placed under arrest. After being advised of her rights, Monoplli allegedly requested an attorney and refused to submit to an intoximeter test.

The police report states that while conducting a search of the vehicle to locate Monoplli’s wallet, deputies located a purse containing an inhaler. Prior to transporting the purse and medication to the detention center, deputies conducted a further inspection and reported locating a glass tube containing white residue, a Brillo-style filter with burn marks, and a wooden stick commonly referred to as a “pusher,” items deputies say are often associated with drug use.

Authorities allege that once at the detention center, Monoplli became combative and kicked correctional officers multiple times. Deputies reported she was restrained and placed into a holding cell without further incident.

A trial for officer scheduling is scheduled for Feb. 5, 2026, in St. Mary’s District Court.

In Maryland, possession of a controlled dangerous substance other than cannabis carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $5,000 fine. Each count of possession of drug paraphernalia carries a maximum penalty of one year of incarceration and a $500 fine. Second-degree assault, including assault on a correctional or detention employee, is a misdemeanor punishable by up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to $2,500.
