WALDORF, Md. — A Waldorf man is facing charges after allegedly resisting arrest during a traffic stop in Charles County that led to signs of impairment and a physical struggle with officers, according to court documents.
Devin Thomas Smith, 44, of Waldorf, was charged with resisting arrest following an incident on March 15, 2026.
According to the statement of probable cause, an officer observed Smith driving erratically along St. Charles Parkway, weaving between lanes and disrupting the normal flow of traffic. After initiating a traffic stop, the officer made contact with Smith, who reportedly displayed slurred speech and other indicators of possible impairment.
During the investigation, Smith performed standardized field sobriety tests, where officers noted multiple signs of impairment. While officers were attempting to continue the investigation and make arrangements for the vehicle and a juvenile passenger, Smith became increasingly uncooperative.
Authorities say Smith began showing aggressive behavior, including clenching his fists and ignoring commands. When officers attempted to place him into custody, he allegedly resisted by pulling away, bracing his body, and attempting to prevent officers from securing him in handcuffs.
Officers ultimately used control techniques to bring Smith to the ground and safely take him into custody. He was then transported to the Charles County Detention Center without further incident.
Charging documents indicate Smith later refused to provide a breath sample after being advised of his rights.
A hearing is set for May 15, 2026 in Charles District Court.
