SHADY SIDE, Md.Shady Side Soft Serve Ice Cream, a cherished local establishment located at 6171 Shady Side Road, is set to open for the season on March 17—this time under new ownership.

New owner Jake Yorkis is excited to continue the sweet traditions that have made the ice cream shop a community favorite for more than 30 years. Yorkis took over the business in November 2024 following the retirement of longtime owner Brad Holt, who spent years perfecting recipes and fostering a welcoming environment.

“Owning an ice cream shop has been a dream come true, and we’re committed to keeping the same great recipes, friendly atmosphere and, most importantly, the smiles that come with every scoop,” Yorkis said.

The shop is known for its signature flavors, including the popular Peanut Butter Bomb, which began as a test recipe and has since sold thousands. Yorkis emphasized his commitment to maintaining the shop’s traditions, and Holt has been there at each step, teaching the recipes and techniques.

“Brad is still very involved, and I am extremely appreciative of his constant teachings. We want to preserve the smiles that come with ice cream and keep the community spirit alive,” he said.

Shady Side Soft Serve Ice Cream is a beloved staple in the area, and Yorkis values the community-first approach instilled by Holt. One particularly meaningful tradition is the shop’s closure on the Fourth of July and Easter.

“Brad always described this place as one where people come for smiles,” the shop’s website states. “He made the decision to close on Independence Day to allow the community to gather and celebrate together. We believe in honoring that spirit of community, country and togetherness, so we will continue this loving tradition.”

The shop will kick off the season with a festive atmosphere, featuring special treats and a warm welcome for all customers.
