The Charles County Commissioners would like to announce that public buildings are open for use by residents on Friday, July 29, and through the weekend during normal operating hours to cool off during forecasted extreme heat.
The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued a Heat Advisory for Maryland jurisdictions in the Capital, Central, Eastern and Southern Regions of Maryland.ย NWS forecasts a potential heat index of more than 105 degrees on Friday, July 29, with continued high temperatures throughout the weekend.ย The Heat Advisory is in effect until Friday evening.ย A combination of hot temperatures and high humidity increases the likelihood of heat-related illnesses.ย
Citizens are encouraged to take the following precautionary measures:
โข Stay indoors as much as possible and limit exposure to the sun.
โข Stay on the lowest floor out of the sunshine if air conditioning is not available.
โข Eat well-balanced, light, and regular meals. Avoid using salt tablets unless directed to do so by a physician.
โข Drink plenty of water. Persons who have epilepsy or heart, kidney, or liver disease; are on fluid-restricted diets; or have a problem with fluid retention should consult a doctor before increasing liquid intake.
โข Limit intake of alcoholic beverages.
โข Dress in loose-fitting, lightweight, and light-colored clothes that cover as much skin as possible.
โข Protect face and head by wearing a wide-brimmed hat.
โข Check on family, friends, and neighbors who do not have air conditioning and who spend much of their time alone.
โข Never leave children or pets alone in closed vehicles.
โข Avoid strenuous work during the warmest part of the day. Use a buddy system when working in extreme heat, and take frequent breaks.
โข Contact 9-1-1 if you experience any emergency, heat related or otherwise.
