Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland teamed up with Sheriff Tim Cameron to hold its second โ€˜Jail & Bailโ€™ fun-raiser on Monday, Sept. 20. On that day, driving their โ€˜black & whiteโ€™ 1950s police cars, Billy and Joyce Cusic arrested willing elected officials as well as renowned business, church and civic leaders.

Once โ€˜arrested,โ€™ the โ€˜perpetratorsโ€™ were driven to The Old Jail in Leonardtown where they were โ€˜triedโ€™ in front of a judge with a court-appointed attorney.ย  A bailiff was present to collect the bail. Once bail was posted, the โ€˜criminalsโ€™ were given a personal tour of The Old Jail museum and then escorted to Tudor Hall for a luncheon hosted by Sheriff Tim Cameron and sponsored by Sunshineโ€™s Catering.

For the event, โ€˜bailโ€™ was set at a minimum of $1,500 and the โ€˜criminalsโ€™ raised bail money well in advance of their arrest through donations made by friends and family. The amount of the bail is equal to the funds needed by Care Net to provide services for one family.

The Care Net Pregnancy Center of Southern Maryland has been serving women and families of Southern Maryland since 1991.ย  With centers in Lexington Park, Leonardtown, and Lusby, they served over 4,000 clients in 2009. These clients represent a cross section of the Southern Maryland community โ€“ those who are in need of assistance when faced with the decisions revolving around a pregnancy at a difficult time in their lives. Care Net is a 501(c)3 non-profit and United Way member agency. All of the agencyโ€™s services are free of charge to clients.

All in all the effort was successful and helped Care Net Pregnancy Center raise close to $40,000 toward helping its clients.
