Sheriff Troy Berry talks with the family of Cpl. Jamel L. Clagett during a service for the fallen and retirees.

La Plata, MD – There was a quote attributed to Mark Twain during the Charles County Sheriffโ€™s Office Memorial Wall Commemoration Ceremony Tuesday, Aug. 30.

โ€œThe two most important days of your life are the day you are born and the day you discover why,โ€ Maj. Chris Baker said, quoting Samuel Clemens.

For most in law enforcement, that realization comes with a commitment to serving the public, a call to service.

โ€œThe truth is, weโ€™re all here as family,โ€ Sheriff Troy Berry told the gathering. โ€œSome of us are here in spirit,โ€ he added.

โ€œI was surprised to realize it had been over two years since names were added to this wall,โ€ Capt. Stephen Salvas said. โ€œThirty names are added this summer.โ€

Among those recognized was Cpl. Jamel L. Clagett, who died December 2014 in an auto accident following the midnight shift.

Also acknowledged were retirees Gordon Brightwell, Ellen Lewis, Margaret Harden, Cpl. Jeffrey Miles, Cpl. William Poole II, James Ammons IV, Shannon Sampson, Sgt. Shane Knowlan, M/Cpl. David Fromme, Sgt. Sharon Walsh, Deborah Myers, Lt. Ralph Acquaviva, Lt. Edward Godwin, Director Pamela Dottellis, Sgt. Robert Cranford, Lt. Col. Robert Cleaveland, Cpl. Lee Potter, Patricia Sanders, Lt. Peter Wearmouth, CFC Sean Davis, Lt. Randolph Thompson, Pfc. Aaron St. Germain, Capt. Michael Klotz, Cathy Rickett, M/Sgt. Carl Rye, M/Sgt. Jeffrey Bryant and Lt. Cecelia Johnston.

โ€œTo all retirees, thank you for a job well done,โ€ Berry said.

He offered words of solace for Clagettโ€™s family.

โ€œBe strong and courageous,โ€ he stressed. โ€œDo not be disappointed. Always know he is nearby.

โ€œIf you need to find a place of comfort and peace, come to this memorial,โ€ the sheriff said. โ€œCome and sit on the bench. It will give you rest, peace and laughter, and uplift your soul.โ€
